  • This talk will cover the advantages of using Textlint, a tool that automates content style and formatting that is traditionally handled by humans adhering to a style guide. I've used it in documentation and marketing sites to put the responsibility of stylistic and formatting in the hands of the writer instead of the PR reviewer. The format will be a sample blog that includes markdown linting with several Textlint plugins that includes: ESLint for markdown code snippets, terminology checks (e.g. always frontend, not front end), ALEX (a library to assist in writing inclusively), common misspellings, write-good (an English prose linter) and a few more. I've found this has freed up my time to make more meaningful PR reviews instead of focusing on smaller issues like grammar and spelling.

  • In this session, we'll talk about the importance of career planning and how to do it effectively. The average person spends more than 90,000 hours in their lifetime at work. Building an enjoyable and fulfilling career is essential to our growth and happiness, however, nearly 87% of the working population feels disengaged at work according to a 2018 Gallup survey. While there is a lot to be done to improve employee engagement for organizations, we as individuals need to own our career by reflecting on our priorities, researching new opportunities, and reinventing ourselves.

  • Data Science and Machine Learning (ML) are very popular now. We will describe most widely used ML models and show their use with Python and R, then with Watson Studio. Model deployment is the part of the ML process where practical results are achieved (when the model is applied to new data to get predictions), and we will talk about different approaches to it. We will also talk about deep learning and its many applications. The attendees should get some basic understanding of Machine Learning and available tools.

  • Women believe that they must be the best at ‘getting the job done’. They must prove they are the most committed and capable and strive to get more experiences and achieve all desired outcomes. However, when promotion decisions are made, the rules change…there are other skills and experiences that you don’t have but told you need…. the bar moves. If you’re a woman of color, the bar often is set even higher, it becomes much harder to compete. When you look at those who are landing the promotions, they are no more qualified or capable than you. What’s the difference? What are they doing differently? What do you need to do differently? Based on research from Vivian’s book, FuelForward: Discover Proven Practices to Fuel Your Career Forward, this program reveals the fundamental career mistake holding women back and strategies to change the game in your career.

  • The remote working trend is becoming more and more popular, especially in STEM industries, whether it’s a weekly work-from-home day or an overall company structure. If you’re not already working remotely, it’s becoming more and more likely that you will in the future. The majority (67%) of remote and flexible working programs are offered at manager’s discretion, so it could be right around the corner. And if you’re a manager, it could be up to you! Plus, studies show that remote teams have higher percentages of women in leadership, so it’s not only a perk, but an equity issue! This presentation will provide actionable tips from an experienced member and manager of a remote workforce, including how to effectively connect with a remote team, how to sell the idea of remote working, how to build a culture that supports this setup, and how to have fun while doing it!

  • My job is to help business owners create, enhance and sell their companies (when they are ready) for the best value at the time. Most owners focus on income over business value. The truth is, while you can have both, the focus should be on value. There are five stages of maturity in a business: Identify, Protect, Build, Harvest & Manage. Each stage demands different priorities and skill sets which we would walk through as a foundation for understanding the business owner's opportunities and risks. With the foundation built, we will present a model for taking stock of where a business owner is at on a holistic basis - balancing the needs of the business with the needs of the person. Owning a business is a pretty lonely endeavor and balance - taking care of both the needs of the business and the needs of the family is hard, regardless of gender. Women have historically been reluctant to "own" their prosperity and outcomes. This information will help them embrace it.
